MILDENHALL GROUP

INTRODUCTION

The small market town of Mildenhall situated in West Suffolk can be traced back to Anglo-Saxon times. Mildenhall's Kingsway cemetery known to the locals as the 'old cemetery' is the only remaining area of its original settlement. Market Cross, MildenhallThe doomsday survey recorded in 1086 highlighted that Mildenhall was an established town with a church, mill, 64 families and a flock of 1000 sheep. Mildenhall boasts a weekly Friday market which has been running since 1412.

Many prominent figures were responsible for its estates such as the North, Hanmer and Bunbury families. The ancient parish of Mildenhall included the hamlets of Beck Row, Holywell Row, Kenny Hill and West Row and it covered an area of about 17,000 acres, the largest in Suffolk. A famous discovery was the Mildenhall treasure, 32 pieces of silver tableware discovered at West Row and now held in the British Museum, a replica can be found at Mildenhall Museum.

Mildenhall currently has a military airbase which has brought lots of employment and business to the town. Mildenhall is situated just off the A11 which provides easy access to towns and cities such as Newmarket, Norwich, Cambridge and London. Modern Mildenhall is an attractive looking town which still has many buildings and monuments that date back from its past.
