SUDBURY AND DISTRICT GROUP

INTRODUCTION

Sudbury is a pleasant market town situated on the River Stour in South Suffolk on the borders with Essex. In A.D. 798 the Saxon Chronicle records that Bishop Aelfhun, Bishop of Dunwich, died whilst visiting the town. A statue of him is present on "The Croft"

Statue of Thomas Gainsborough

In 1381 Simon Theobald, Lord Chancellor of England was beheaded during the Peasant's Revolt and his head placed upon a spike in London. His mummified head was returned to his home town and now rests in the vestry of St Gregory Church.

Thomas Gainsborough, the famous artist, was born in the town in 1727 and the town hosts the world renowned Gainsborough House museum.

Sudbury was the centre of the Silk industry and to this day silk is still woven in the town.

The surrounding area encompasses some of the most pretty and famous villages in Suffolk. Long Melford, Lavenham and Kersey are all within 10 miles whilst the famous Constable Country lies some 15 miles to the east. The area is regularly used by television and film companies and the popular TV, series "Lovejoy" was based in Long Melford.

With its good transport links Sudbury is an ideal gateway to Suffolk.
